Having Second Thoughts

Smokers often have second thoughts about quitting. A study showed that 9 out of 10 smokers would like to quit.

Some of the excuses smokers use to keep smoking are:

`I'd rather be a thin smoker than a fat ex-smoker.`
Smokers fear weight gain. A recent Surgeon General's report stated that quitting smoking only "produces a 4-pound greater weight gain than continued smoking."

"I won't be able to relax."
Each cigarette that you smoke contains nicotine, and nicotine makes you feel nervous. So each time you light up, you are going to feel more tense. You will feel more relaxed after you quit.

"Cigarettes aren't harmful"
30 or 40 years ago no one really knew the danger of cigarettes. We now know that smokers are:
  • 15 times more likely to get lung cancer.
  • 16 times more likely to get emphysema.
  • 3 times more likely to have a heart attack.
In fact, medical researchers have found that each cigarette smoked takes approximately 15 minutes off your life.

And what about the harm to non-smokers, who are near you when you smoke? Children of smokers are 2 times more likely to become ill than children of non-smokers and much more likely to start smoking.

"I've been healthy all my life."
Very few smokers go through their lives without having harmful effects or disease from smoking.

"I can't think about what might happen to me years from now."
Most people find it hard to think about what will happen 10, 20 or 30 years from now.

Some reasons for quitting today are:

  • stained teeth and fingers
  • difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
  • bad breath
  • getting more colds and flu
  • missed work
  • smoking costs a lot of money
  • fewer friends or co-workers smoke
  • a feeling of being "owned" by cigarettes

"It's too late for me to quit to do any good"
It is never too late to quit! Our bodies start to heal themselves right away. The chance of getting cancer, heart disease, stroke, or bronchitis will be much lower if you stop smoking.

"Quitting is so difficult."
Smokeless makes quitting easier. If you follow the steps of the program, you will stop smoking for good.
